This is a wooden bowl I made for Betty for Christmas 2002.
It is to hold the wooden fruit that you see in the first
picture. It is made from a glue up of maple and walnut
woods and "turned" on a Lathe.

This next bowl is done in a segmented glue up. It is made up of
49 pieces of wood cut precisely to size and glued together to form
rings. There are two layers of segmented rings (24 pieces each)
glued together and then glued to the base. The base is solid purpleheart
wood and the rings are alternating maple and purpleheart.
The first three pictures show the glue up before it has been turned and
the last three pictures show the finished bowl. It has 5 coats of a
clear water base urethane finish.
This was made for Betty's Mum for Christmas 2004.

This little slide show gives an idea of the steps in the
construction of a segmented turning.

This next item is a little candy dish measuring 5-1/2" dia x 2-7/8" high.
It is also made using the segmented method and contains 121 pieces of wood.
The different varieties used in this dish are: Maple (Canada) Purpleheart
(Brazil) Oak (Canada) and Ebony (Africa). It is finished with 5 coats of
clear water based urethane.
